New property owners
If you have recently purchased a property, please note that change of ownership occurs once an official certificate from your municipality’s assessment department has been received. The school tax bill is linked to the property, not to the owner. It is your responsibility to pay the bill if you are the current owner of the property, even if the former owner’s name still appears on it.
Does one of the following situations apply to you?
If you are a new property owner and the school tax bill you receive is in the name of the former owner, this bill belongs to you: Please pay it to avoid interest charges.
The school tax bill is linked to the property, not to the owner. Change of ownership occurs once an official certificate from your municipality’s assessment department has been received. However, there may be a delay (from a few weeks to a few months) in obtaining or processing information related to the transfer of ownership. We thank you for your patience during the processing of the ownership change.
Montreal taxpayers receive their annual school tax bill after July 1 each year.
If you are a new property owner, the bill may have been forwarded to the former owner’s address, particularly if they requested mail forwarding through Canada Post.
You are still required to pay your bill by the due date.
If you are a new property owner and have not received your school tax bill, please complete the following form to notify us or contact our customer service at 514 384-5034.
If you receive the school tax bill for a property you have sold, please take one of the following actions:
Option 1 (preferred)
Forward the school tax bill to the new owner as soon as possible (in person or electronically).
OR
Option 2 (if option 1 is not possible)
- Return us the school tax bill in the original envelope, clearly indicating: “Return to sender” and “Property sold”.
- OR, please complete the following form to notify us that the property has been sold.
If you are still the owner of a property but wish to receive your school tax bill at a different mailing address, please complete the Change of mailing address request form. We will process your request as soon as possible and will contact you only if additional information is required.
